Downsizing Tips, Techniques & Strategies

Whether you’re an empty nester moving to a smaller house or you’re renting a smaller apartment than you previously owned, downsizing your belongings can be a challenge. The thought of parting with some of your stuff may be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few tips to make downsizing easier.

  • Make a list of items you absolutely can’t live without. It’s impossible to keep everything, but making this list will help you keep what matters the most and part more easily with what doesn’t.
  • Recycle, reuse, sell or donate unwanted or unused items — don’t throw anything in the garbage. Breathe new life into your items by passing them on to people who may need them or will make them sparkle once again.
  • Measure your new space in comparison with your current home or apartment. This will help you gauge how much furniture and other items will fit into each room.
  • If you have a ton of stuff, sorting through it all can be overwhelming. Start going through everything a few months before your move, and take time every day to get a little bit done instead of trying to do it all in one weekend.
  • Be selective regarding the sentimental stuff. If it’s an antique piece that doesn’t fit your décor, consider parting with it. For the kids’ artwork and school projects, save only the ones with personal meaning or value.
  • Pick your storage wisely. Opt for furniture with storage options, square containers that work better in most spaces than round ones, and cubes that can double as storage, seating or coffee tables.
